I am happy to report to you the outcome of our recent Samoa
Ophthalmology Outreach at Savaii Hospital between the 21st and the 31st
of May.
Our team of volunteers and medical professionals successfully operated
on 92 patients over the 10 day outreach. With a real world cost of over
NZ$ 420,000 these volunteered
medical services have indeed made a
significant impact on many lives.
We do want to acknowledge our volunteer surgeon, nurses and support
staff that, through their hard work and dedication, made this venture
of giving sight to the blind such a success.
There are more than 80 million blind people worldwide that could have
their sight restored by the operations we give today; and because of
your generosity there are 92 less blind people accounted in that
statistic.
The reward for us is making a change in peoples’ lives through
practical and spiritual means, helping them realise their hopes and
dreams of a better future. We are committed to see (pun not intended)
more people in the outer islands of the Pacific receive such
life-changing surgery and care.
I am still amazed how a twenty minute operation and 18 hours of post-op
rest can give back the precious gift of sight to someone who may have
been in darkness for decades. Often there are tears of joy when the
bandages are removed and they are embraced by family members that they
can now see. One case in point comes from an elderly Samoan man named
Uso. He was completely unable to see due to a dense cataract in his
left eye, and the combination of a damaged iris and a cataract that had
fallen into the back of his right eye. The surgeon Dr. Jeff Rutgard was
unable to do anything for his right eye, but surgery to his left eye
was a success. In our post-op assessment of Uso we were told through a
translator that he was able to make out people’s faces and other
surroundings. The smile on his face was enough evidence for us!
The hard struggle of setting up this Ophthalmology Outreach and getting
the services out to these remote places now pales in comparison to the
fulfilment of a job well done. This is truly our reward!
We are so grateful to you our partners and friends for your continued
generosity. We salute you for equipping our hands and feet to bring the
Good News. However, the frontier waits for us as we venture out again …
to another place and another people group.
Come on, it’s time get your feet wet !
