After my travels to the Philippines and Japan, I once again found myself on a plane heading to Fiji. Here I joined the last Fiji outreach of the year onboard the Pacific Link.
It was a fairly rough sail between Suva and Nabouwalu (on Fiji’s other main island, Vanua Levu) and many felt queasy throughout the 23 hour voyage. In spite of this, we were rewarded by a safe passage, dolphins, and several rainbows as we approached the township of Nabouwalu.
There were a number of challenges in planning this outreach; challenges that demonstrated again the provision of a faithful God. In a matter of weeks we went from having personnel gaps in our Ophthalmology and Optometry Teams, to securing the services of a Wellington-based Ophthalmologist and an Optometrist from Dunedin.
We hope to treat close to 80 cataract patients, provide Optometry services to over 700 people, and serve a further 1500 people through our Primary Health Care clinics. Additionally, we have a Construction Team installing water tanks in designated schools, clinics and villages. Dental and Primary Health Care education is also being taught in the villages, and believe it or not we even have a clown from Italy onboard! He goes around giving animal balloons to children and adults alike - a real winner for those who are ‘kids at heart’.
Your ship the Pacific Link returns to Tauranga, New Zealand on the 23rd of August signaling the end of a fruitful outreach season for 2009. As always, we will be there to welcome back the ship and her crew as they berth at Sulphur Point, Tauranga.
We are so thankful to everyone who has helped us make a difference this year! Our partners and volunteers have given generously to help the people of Fiji. Thousands have been served with medical help and the loving message of a God who cares for us all.
On that note let me thank you once again for being the wind in our sails and giving us the hope to keep serving with willing hearts ... in spite of the challenges.
