After watching the latest news on TV, I am left with a feeling of emptiness. The talk of recession, redundancies and job cuts, and an impending global economic collapse is one that is quite pervasive right now. Just recently a reputable mission agency in Auckland reported a 15% drop in people’s giving, whilst experiencing a 100% increase in families needing help with food and basic necessities just to survive Christmas.
I started to worry as I listened, but then something clicked ... it was a change of mindset. How come the news never reported on the 85% who did give generously to the agency and how is it we seem to negate those who made a point of giving even when it hurt?!
Then I thought about Christmas and its message of hope: “For God so loved the world that He gave his only Son ... Jesus Christ!” As a Christian I am moved with compassion for those who do not have enough this Christmas time ... moved with compassion and action.
As a young man growing up in a poor country like the Philippines, I know how hunger feels - having experienced it firsthand. That experience has left an indelible mark on my heart for those who go without. I have decided that even if the world is experiencing a financial crisis, my response and calling is to do what is good and required of me - so I will give. I think Micah 6:8 sums it up:
“He has told you O man what is good, and what the Lord requires of you; but to do justice, to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God.”
‘A boy was frantically throwing starfish back into the ocean one day, when his grandfather told him that it was futile to continue. Without missing a beat the boy picked up one more and said, “It matters to this one Granddad!”’
History does speak for itself when good men do nothing in the face of great adversity. The answer to fear is Courage and the remedy to worry is Hope. We have that already available to us; it is not a feeling but a choice to make! We can choose courage and hope today. Become part of the answer!
May God give you the peace that transcends all understanding this Christmas, and may God’s hope pervade your New Year. God bless you
and thank you for your generosity to those we serve together.
Merry Christmas and a Prosperous New Year! |
